Practicing as a designer of sets and costumes for film and theatre for twenty five years has offered the opportunity of participating in many engagements as well as cultural exchanges in Japan. In 2005 I was awarded an Australia Council Fellowship to bring these two related strands of my life together. As a result, as well as running my design practice I am enrolled as a candidate in a Master of Design (Hons) in the faculty of the College of Fine Art at the University of New South Wales. In November I will be returning to Tokyo as an Artist In Residence at the Academy of Arts, Tokyo Institute of Technology where I will be making a documentary that is exploring and narrating the multiple ‘masks’ of Tokyo and their manifestation as complementarities.
